Money just showed up in our account, say four on trial in Columbia swindle

A group of destitute swindlers on trial on charges of stealing $5.7 million from Columbia University claim they never took the money — it just miraculously showed up in their bank accounts. The quartet — George Castro, Jeremy Dieudonne, Joseph Pineras and Walter Stephens — went on trial Thursday in the brazen scheme, which rerouted millions meant for New York Presbyterian Hospital into their business bank account.

God Bless Bob Costas

America’s preeminent sportscaster, Bob Costas, who will once again be anchoring Olympic coverage for NBC, will protest the International Olympic Committee’s insensitive decision to not mark the 40th anniversary of the slaughter of Israel’s Olympic athletes with a moment of silence by having his own moment of silence:

At the July 27 Opening Ceremony from London, Costas plans to call out the IOC for denying Israel’s request for a moment of silence acknowledging the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches at the 1972 Games. On the 40th anniversary of Munich, it’s a decision he finds “baffling.” When the Israeli delegation enters the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, Costas will stage his own protest: “I intend to note that the IOC denied the request,” he says, modulating his voice as if he were on the air. “Many people find that denial more than puzzling but insensitive. Here’s a minute of silence right now.”

The Only Known Recording of Sigmund Freud’s Voice

(Video Link)

The father of psychology spent the last year of his life in Britain. A BBC radio crew visited him at his home on Dec. 7, 1938. He was suffering from jaw cancer and uttering every word was agonizing. But he managed to make the following statement:

I started my professional activity as a neurologist trying to bring relief to my neurotic patients. Under the influence of an older friend and by my own efforts, I discovered some important new facts about the unconscious in psychic life, the role of instinctual urges, and so on. Out of these findings grew a new science, psychoanalysis, a part of psychology, and a new method of treatment of the neuroses. I had to pay heavily for this bit of good luck. People did not believe in my facts and thought my theories unsavory. Resistance was strong and unrelenting. In the end I succeeded in acquiring pupils and building up an International Psychoanalytic Association. But the struggle is not yet over.

Stuck in the Mud | Foreign Affairs

By the end of 2014, NATO needs to remove about 100,000 shipping containers full of equipment and 50,000 wheeled vehicles from Afghanistan; it will leave behind any unused fuel. NATO officials point out that in order for all International Security Assistance Force ISAF military equipment to be removed from Afghanistan in time, a container would have to leave the country every seven minutes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting now — a tough order.
