Who’s Advertising Directly to Obama on ESPN?

There’s a little blind item in Politico’s story about interest groups advertising on ESPN specifically to reach our sports-fan president: A media strategist tells writer Anna Palmer that an unnamed client had advertised on the network during a climate change debate in his first term “for exactly that reason.” Since watching sports on TiVo sucks, the tactic makes sense, but hopefully if you’re the president you can at least arrange for a mute button.

Why Isn’t Boehner a Target in Congressional Elections?

When Mark Sanford debated a cardboard cutout of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in his South Carolina race last week, it was a replay of a tried-and-true Republican strategy: Demonize Pelosi and wrap her like a stone around your opponent’s neck.

The tactic can be effective, torn from a well-worn playbook that dates back nearly a decade. But it does beg a question: Why isn’t Speaker John Boehner targeted in the same way by Democrats?

Unlike his predecessor as speaker, the Ohio Republican has not yet become a standard attack line for Democrats in races nationwide, leaving some to wonder how the most powerful elected leader in the Republican Party has escaped unscathed.

‘Downton Abbey’ Adds Gary Carr As Jazz Singer For Season Four

post thumbnail

Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame said today that Gary Carr’s addition to the ITV show “will bring interesting twists to the drama.” The actor has most recently been seen in BBC series Bluestone 42 and Death In Paradise. His Downton character, Jack Ross, is a jazz singer described as “a charming and charismatic” young man. The addition marks the first time Downton has had a black character. The show has in the past faced criticism that it lacks cultural diversity. In the fourth season, he’ll join previously announced new cast members Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Harman, Joanna David and Dame Harriet Walter. The fourth season is currently shooting for air later this year.

Wolf Blitzer Is Apparently Famous Enough to Get ‘Swatted’

“Swatting,” a fad like planking and fridging (but far more dangerous and expensive), might finally be over now that it’s trickled down to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. The prank, currently reaching “epidemic” proportions, is designed to send the SWAT team to the homes of famous people, like Ryan Seacrest, Chris Brown, and Justin Timberlake, with anonymous calls or messages to police alleging violence in progress. At Blitzer’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, over the weekend, authorities were told someone had been shot and set up a perimeter only to find out it was fake, and that the man of the house wasn’t even home. “Wolf is fine,” said a network spokesperson. “That’s what matters most.” The prankster is not in custody, no matter what CNN says.

‘Mad Men’ Recap: Yep, That’s How the Ad Biz Reacted to a 1968 Tragedy

It’s the evening of April 4, 1968, and a ballroom full of New York City advertising executives has just received word that Martin Luther King Jr. has been shot to death. The program they’ve assembled for, naturally, has ground to a halt. But after just a few minutes, the lights are repeatedly dimmed, beckoning the ad folk back to their tables.

Can this depiction on “Mad Men” possibly be how the ad industry really dealt with one of the most horrifying moments of the 20th century, a murder that threatened to destroy the civil-rights movement and push an already-fragile country toward the brink? Did they really think it was enough to have a half-assed assassination intermission, as though on a break during “Bye Bye Birdie”?

Actually, yes.
