Why Your iPhone Addiction Is Snuffing Your Creativity

Having a stimulation fix in your pocket isn’t always the best for you. In praise of the power of boredom.

You know the feeling–you’re walking to the coffee machine, and you feel a tingle of knowledge-needing excitement. You pull out your phone to check Twitter, and promptly walk into a wall.

Your iPhone acts like an endless supply of Cheetos

And while that may be what’s happening with your face, it’s also what’s happening with your creative energy. When we’re constantly thumbing at our smartphones, our minds are always engaged–yay, stimulation!–but we’re not actually thinking about anything. Like Brian S. Hall at ReadWrite says, since we never get bored, we never get creative.

Are Sports Prices Too High To Deliver Return on Investment?

Along with death and taxes, add spiraling sports costs to the certainties of life. During good times and bad for advertising, prices keep climbing for the ultimate reality TV: live sports. But recently companies like DirecTV are pushing back against rights fees and marketers like Anheuser-Busch InBev are struggling with ways to justify them, it raises the question: Can sports continue to defy gravity?

Reliant on dependable ratings winners at a time when nothing else is a sure thing, TV networks and cable and satellite operators are shelling out double, or more, what they used to spend to carry live games from the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, Nascar, college football and basketball and other sports.

Consider the size of some recent deals: Starting in 2014, MLB will roughly double its annual payday thanks to national-TV renewals worth $12.4 billion with ESPN, Fox and TBS. After the 2014 regular season, ESPN will pay an estimated $7 billion to televise college football’s new national playoff through 2026. Time Warner Cable will spend an estimated $8 billion over 25 years to create a new regional sports network around the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Sports Business Journal.

Rand Paul’s Play to Win Over Black Voters at Howard University

The GOP minority outreach efforts continue: This time, it’s Sen. Rand Paul taking the message to a historically black university.

Paul will be delivering a speech at Howard University on Wednesday, where he’ll talk about “the importance of outreach to younger voters, as well as minority groups,” according to his office. He also plans to address school choice and civil liberties.

The Kentucky Republican’s appearance echoes the recommendations made in the Republican National Committee’s autopsy report, detailing why the party lost the 2012 election and urging the party to court minority and young voters. Paul’s positions on foreign policy, Internet freedom, and reforming drug laws appeal to younger voters on college campuses. He also has targeted mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes, which disproportionately affects African-Americans.

Fox News Reporter Wins Reprieve In Theater Shooting Source Case

Fox News reporter Jana Winter was facing six months in jail for refusing to testify about her sources. Instead, the judge ruled late today that he won’t decide Winter’s fate until it’s determined whether evidence she reported on will be introduced in the case.

Last July, Winter wrote a FoxNews.com story about Aurora, CO theater shooting suspect James Holmes mailing his psychiatrist a notebook filled with violent drawings. Winter cited law enforcement sources in her report. Holmes’ lawyers objected saying the sources violated a gag order. According to the Denver Post, Judge Carlos Samour Jr. agreed with Winter’s lawyers that the issue isn’t “ripe” for ruling.

“The Court is not comfortable proceeding on an incomplete record,” Samour writes in his order. “As soon as the record is adequate, the Court will move forward.”

Samour was to decide Wednesday whether to order Winter to testify.
