Kathryn Bigelow addresses ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ torture criticism

‘Zero Dark Thirty’ director Kathryn Bigelow answers criticism of the film’s depiction of torture, which she says does not equal endorsement of the tactics.

For a long time, measuring more years than I care to count, I thought the movie that became “Zero Dark Thirty” would never happen. The goal, to make a modern, rigorous film about counter-terrorism, centered on one of the most important and classified missions in American history, was exciting and worthy enough, or so it seemed. But there were too many obstacles, too many secrets, and politicians standing in the way of an easy path.

Been baffled recently by someone’s online behavior?

At Full-Stop, Helen Stuhr-Rommereim offers advice drawn from the book published by those who pioneered the internet in 1995. A tip from the document: “…people with whom you communicate are located across the globe…  Give them a chance to wake up, come to work, and login before assuming the mail didn’t arrive or that they don’t care.” In the age of instant gratification and stress that comes from places without wi-fi, we could do well to listen.

Words We Love Too Much

Colleagues and readers have nominated another crop of words and phrases that seem to appear with numbing regularity in our prose. Some are unavoidable on occasion, and none deserve to be banned outright. But take this as an invitation to look for fresher alternatives.
