I Want to Be a Millennial When I Retire

For now my son Max writes songs, tours and does what he wants. He is not rich or secure, but why should he measure his life on the same scale as his parents’?

Enjoy Some Of the Weirder YouTube Music Awards Moments

Tonight’s YouTube Music Awards were certainly a treat for all you Greta Gerwig and Eminem fans out there. (A Venn diagram which is basically just a circle, right?) The Frances Ha star worked it out in Arcade Fire’s Spike Jonze-directed live video for "Afterlife," punching her way through a sylvan winterscape in a blazer and kicking along with a troupe of wonderful little girl dancers.

Meanwhile Marshall Mathers brought that classic 1,000 yard stare and whisper voice during his performance of "RAP GOD," a celebration of his selection as the YouTube Music Awards 2013 Artist of the Year. Give the kids what they want, we guess?

Watch Julian Assange Open M.I.A’s Terminal 5 Show With a Ten-Minute Talk About Press Freedom

Unlikely (if perfect) collaborators M.I.A. and Julian Assange have been working together since last spring, when they teamed up for Assange’s TV show The World Tomorrow, for which M.I.A. composed some original music. The WikiLeaks founder returned the favor on Friday night with a surprise appearance at M.I.A’s Terminal 5 show. Kicking off an upcoming tour for her latest album, the singer introduced her "EPIC guest speaker" as a screen showing Assange was lowered. Speaking via Skype from London’s Ecuadorian embassy, Assange does his best Benedict Cumberbatch impression for nearly ten minutes, talking about freedom of the press and the state of modern privacy. While NSA chatter isn’t typical (or necessarily welcome) on a Friday night — least of all at Terminal 5 — M.I.A. fans have probably come to expect diatribes at her shows. See as much of Assange’s speech as you can handle below.

Rand Paul Bends to ‘Hacks and Haters,’ Cites Wikipedia’s Gattaca Entry

On the same day that he claimed he’s "being unfairly targeted by a bunch of hacks and haters," and lamented that he can’t challenge those accusing him of plagiarism to a duel, BuzzFeed noted that links to Wikipedia articles on Gattaca and Stand and Deliver quietly appeared on Rand Paul’s website. The fact that his speeches didn’t have footnotes wasn’t really the issue, but now we may know why Paul kept bringing that up. BuzzFeed also reported this weekend that the senator’s book Government Bullies includes a three-page section from a Heritage Foundation case study that wasn’t properly quoted or cited in the footnotes.

Why the Left Sucks at Trolling

Rep. Alan Grayson has been getting nasty emails lately. He’s been called a "Jew-boy" and also a "German Nazi." One person said he was "lower than whale dung" while another writer went with "lower than snail scum." And of course he was told to burn in hell.

He’s not altogether surprised. He knows this is what happens when you head butt a hornets’ nest, as he did earlier this month by sending out an email equating the tea party to the Ku Klux Klan. The email—complete with a donate button at the bottom—included a picture of a burning cross as the "T" in "tea party."

And it wasn’t just Internet trolls or even just the right that got riled up. Missouri Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill condemned the email, head of the Democratic National Committee Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz said she was "disappointed" by it, and no Democrats in Congress have said publicly they support the rhetoric or imagery.

Wiretapping Your Kids

Judith Shulevitz shudders at how easy it’s become to be a one-mother NSA: For the iPhone I will soon be buying [my son], I can get an iPhone Spy Stick, to be plugged into a USB port while he sleeps; it downloads Web histories, e-mails, and text messages, even the deleted ones. Or I can get Mobile […]
