Richard Johnson Returning to New York as a Post Gossip Columnist

Richard Johnson’s nearly quarter-century reign as "Page Six" editor ended in late 2010, when he moved to Los Angeles to head up a gossip section called "Flash" for News Corp’s tablet newspaper The Daily. When The Daily folded, Johnson stayed on in L.A. for The Post, but now that he’s returning to New York, things will be a bit different: Johnson won’t be editing Page Six, according to a Post memo shared with Daily Intelligencer. Rather, he’ll be writing a new column this fall that "will be a mix of gossip from both coasts, society news, business and politics in the legendary style of Neal Travis." Emily Smith will stay on as Page Six editor, along with deputies Ian Mohr, Stephanie Smith and Mara Siegler. Cindy Adams will keep her column as well. The full memo from acting Post editor Jesse Angelo follows.

It’s my pleasure to announce that Richard Johnson will be coming back from his beat in LA to the great city of New York to author a new column starting later this fall that will give people yet another reason to love the New York Post and nypost.com.

The column will be a mix of gossip from both coasts, society news, business and politics in the legendary style of Neal Travis.  It will be a great complement to our already excellent Post coverage in those areas.

Emily Smith will continue her outstanding leadership of our flagship Page Six brand, together with her deputy Ian Mohr, Stephanie Smith and Mara Siegler.  Cindy Adams will continue to offer up her unique mix of dish, scoop and sauce.  And they will all be involved as we grow and expand our fantastic new pagesix.com.  We have always had the premier names in this space, and broken the biggest stories, but no we will set the bar even higher for those who aspire to compete with us.

As I’ve said before, the New York Post is one of the best brands in the business and there’s a lot more cool stuff in the works. Stay tuned.

Jesse

Obama allies cite PR missteps in bid for Syria hit

In this Sept. 10, 2013, photo, President Barack Obama addresses the nation in a live televised speech from the East Room of the White House in Washington. Some of Obama’s top allies say the president misread a few crucial political forces when he asked Congress to support his bid to strike Syria over last month’s chemical weapons attack. They say the chief one is the nation’s profound weariness with military entanglements in the Middle East. Robert Zemeckis May Direct Charlie Kaufman’s Young-Adult Sci-Fi Movie

Mind-altering screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) has adapted a cool-sounding young adult trilogy called Chaos Walking. And now Robert Zemeckis, having come back to real live filmmaking with 2012’s Flight, twelve years after Castaway, is thinking of directing this endeavor. The first book in author Patrick Ness’s series, called The Knife of Never Letting Go, details “an infection that renders all thought audible in a dystopian future where humans have colonized an alien planet.”

The NSA machine: Too big for anyone to understand

FILE - NSA's Utah Data Center is shown in this Thursday, June 6, 2013 file photo taken in Bluffdale, Utah. Newly declassified documents released Tuesday Sept. 10, 2013 tell a story of a surveillance apparatus so unwieldy and complex that nobody fully comprehended it, even as the government pointed it at the American people in the name of protecting them. Documents from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court show that even senior lawyers and officials weren't sure how the system worked and didn't understand what they were told. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, FILE)WASHINGTON (AP) — The surveillance machine grew too big for anyone to understand.

The “Worst Twerk Fail EVER” Video Was a Fake Jimmy Kimmel Production

As many suspected, the “Worst Twerk Fail EVER” video is a fake. Jimmy Kimmel, who had a hand in its making, confirmed it tonight on his show.

The video featured an inverted twerker named Caitlin Heller, who caught on fire after her roommate opened the door she was twerking against, causing her to spill over onto a table holding a lit candle. Kimmel showed a “full director’s cut” of the video on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which featured him coming through the door after the roommate and extinguishing the fire. It turns out that the twerker’s name isn’t Caitlin Heller, but Daphne Avalon. She works as a Hollywood stuntwoman.

Kimmel explained that his team posted the video on YouTube without promoting it, instead choosing to “let the magic happen.” And so it did — the video received over 9 million views and spawned a sort of supercut (assembled by the Live team) of news anchors marveling over what they thought was real. (The best clip within is of the women on The View, who all seemed convinced of the video’s veracity.)

Kimmel said that he hoped this exercise would stop twerking forever, but if anything, it’ll probably just inspire more trolling and/or people setting themselves on fire for the sake of YouTube views. That could be satisfying, too.
