Das Racist Is Done

Well, that was a fun few years. Performing solo at a German festival originally slated to feature Das Racist, Himanshu Suri blew through the following announcement with a grin on his face: “You guys wanna know the secret? Alright, so I’m gonna do some Das Racist songs, but Das Racist is breaking up and we’re not a band anymore.” The other rapping half of the trio, Victor Vazquez a.k.a. Kool A.D. a.k.a. second Latin rapper to like the Beatles, tweeted, “for the record i quit das racist 2 months ago and was asked by our manager not to announce it yet. apparently @himanshu wanted to do it tho.”

Vazquez assured concerned fans that, despite that one song’s refrain designed for this moment — “we’re not joking / just joking / we are joking / just joking / we’re not joking” — it’s not a joke. Hypeman/laugh-soloist Ashok Kondabolu a.k.a. Dapwell tells Spin the group had planned to break up last spring. “We had just signed this record deal and we were going to put out one proper album and then go on a farewell tour, release a proper breaking up statement that could have been really funny, maybe a weird, stupid video. Now, all of that has gone to shit.” He says the split feels like “a huge opportunity squandered.”

Heems and Kool A.D. each released two mixtapes in 2012, so it’s probably reasonable to expect more music in some fashion.

Lots of Crazy Things Are Happening on Rihanna’s Airplane Tour

In case you missed it, Rihanna is playing seven shows in seven cities in seven days, traveling on a Boeing 777 with 777 with something like 150 journalists on board. And yeah, it’s turning into a hellmouth in the sky a little bit. Julieanne Smolinski at Popdust writes that Rihanna’s concerts are starting increasingly later than scheduled, setting the whole convoy behind, and that Rih-Rih is making herself completely scarce, enough so that “‘where the hell is Rihanna?’ has replaced any of her earwormy hooks.” Maud Deitch and Mary H.K. Choi paint the madness in a back-and-forth post at MTV Style, with Choi writing, “The Australian with the harmonica is STREAKING ON THE PLANE as we scream ‘save our jobs’ and ‘access’ and ‘interviews’ and ‘just one headline’ at the abject lack of Rihanna time.” As you could expect with all those rabid writers experiencing the ruckus in real time, there’s lots more out there. And the tour still has two days left.

Adam Carolla Is Now a Fox News Contributor

Former Man Show host and current podcast host Adam Carolla has been scooped up by Fox News as an official contributor. While Carolla has appeared on the channel several times, he’ll now visit The O’Reilly Factor weekly, as well as other shows occasionally. Carolla’s politics are all over the map; he leans conservative and libertarian, but his progressive views on social issues may give him and O’Reilly a few no-fly zones.

Benedict Cumberbatch Went Berserk Playing The Hobbit’s Smaug

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is to The Hobbit‘s Smaug as Andy Serkis is to Gollum. “It’s very freeing, once you put the suit on and the sensors. I’ve never felt less encumbered, actually,” Cumberbatch says of the stint as a motion-capture dragon. “You just have to lose your shit on a carpeted floor, in a place that looks a little bit like a mundane government building.” With the second of the three Hobbit films titled The Desolation of Smaug, plan for lots of Cumberbatch shit-losing.

Channing Tatum Did Not Steal Stripper Moves

Two fantastically named fellows, Thomas “Awesome” Austin and London Steele, have really been trying to kill Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike buzz. “Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business,” Tatum said at a junket on Saturday, addressing the male strippers’ TMZ-delivered accusations that Tatum stole stories and — much, much more gravely — moves from them during his brief stint in the field. Here’s Tatum’s take: “There’s not one character that I took from my real life; this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. And we created everything from a fictional place.” It sounds like Tatum is taking the accusations in stride, refusing to badmouth Awesome and Steele “because they’re part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting.” They are also some of “the most creative people.” Rest knowing Magic Mike is original, fictional, and will not only contain sexy dudes, but dudes being sexy creatively.

Django Unchained Gets an International Trailer

Seven long, anxiety- and excitement-ridden days since Django Unchained‘s first trailer hit, the wait till December has been given the salve of an international clip for Quentin Tarantino’s next film. Herein you’ll receive: Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter character’s name, Dr. King Schultz, and a visual gag that remains great after many viewings; at least 50 percent more shots of Waltz and Jamie Foxx blasting folks; the same Johnny Cash/James Brown soundtrack segue; a smidgen more of Lost‘s Mr. Friendly; a single glorious second of Tarantino mainstay Samuel L. Jackson; a reminder that it’s fun to live in America, land of the free Django Unchained being released on Christmas 2012 rather than this trailer’s vaguely heralded “next year.”

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Trailer: Infinity, Sort of

Welcome to the debut of Emma Watson’s American Accent. Welcome, also, to Emma Watson welcoming us to the Island of Misfit Toys, inviting us to “go be psychos together,” and doing her Rocky Horror thing in the first trailer for The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Stephen Chbosky’s adaptation of his own 1999 novel will feature angsty typewriting and loud proclamations of high school battle cries — notably the “we are infinite” sentiment, which is either about to get disowned or adopted anew by teens everywhere. But hey, Logan Lerman’s portrayal of narrator/protagonist Charlie looks to be on point, and Paul Rudd plays an English teacher.
