{"id":1814,"date":"2013-01-14T09:12:45","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gabrielsnyder.com\/notes\/?p=1814"},"modified":"2013-01-14T09:12:45","modified_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:12:45","slug":"mayor-bloomberg-thinks-he-can-break-up-the-nra-and-the-gop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gabrielsnyder.com\/notes\/2013\/01\/14\/mayor-bloomberg-thinks-he-can-break-up-the-nra-and-the-gop\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Bloomberg Thinks He Can Break Up the NRA and the GOP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pixel.nymag.com\/imgs\/daily\/intel\/2012\/11\/02\/02-mayor-bloomberg.o.jpg\/a_190x190.jpg?w=525\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Last month in an appearance on <i>Meet the Press<\/i>, New York <i>Times<\/i> columnist David Brooks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/tv\/david-brooks-slams-counterproductive-mayor-bloomberg-in-urban-vs-rural-gun-debate\/\">said<\/a> that Mayor Bloomberg might be &#8220;counterproductive&#8221; as a spokesman for gun control because the movement needs to win over &#8220;rural and red America.&#8221; As Frank Rich <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2012\/12\/frank-rich-americas-other-original-sin.html\">put it<\/a>: &#8220;Translation: He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an East Coast Jew.&#8221; Bloomberg shot back at Brooks in a Sunday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/mayor-bloomberg-takes-on-the-gun-lobby\/2013\/01\/13\/5fd61888-5d9c-11e2-9940-6fc488f3fecd_story_2.html\">interview<\/a> with the Washington <i>Post<\/i>, saying, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Incidentally, just define David Brooks &#8230; As I remember, he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got to be in the 1\u00c2\u00a0percent \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the amount of money he makes as a columnist. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know where that came from.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He also provided more fodder for Brooks, saying of gun rights advocates who think the government is out to get them, &#8220;the general public that thinks this is meshugana.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d But supposedly, Bloomberg is fine with others taking the lead on his pet issue. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And so we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not going to be the star,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bloomberg said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153My interest is in having this done. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to get credit for it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course, Bloomberg still wants to play a large role in the push for stricter gun laws, but he&#8217;s content to <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2012\/12\/now-bloomberg-keeps-low-profile-on-newtown.html\">let his super-PAC do the talking<\/a>. In the last election Bloomberg donated $10 million to five candidates who oppose the NRA and four won. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It seemed effective, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m certainly going to take a good, hard look at next time,&#8221; says Bloomberg. &#8220;You can organize people, I can write checks.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say that Bloomberg is following anyone else&#8217;s lead on the issue.
