{"id":1876,"date":"2013-01-18T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T14:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gabrielsnyder.com\/notes\/?p=1876"},"modified":"2013-01-18T09:00:33","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T14:00:33","slug":"larry-pages-wired-interview-innovation-is-nothing-without-commercialization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gabrielsnyder.com\/notes\/2013\/01\/18\/larry-pages-wired-interview-innovation-is-nothing-without-commercialization\/","title":{"rendered":"Larry Page&#8217;s Wired Interview: Innovation Is Nothing Without Commercialization"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The CEO of Google is revealed as a &#8220;moon shot&#8221; man, and who believes in 1,000% improvements, not the 10% that most CEOs aim for.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1739013\/7-ways-larry-page-defining-googles-future\">Larry Page<\/a>, cofounder and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/most-innovative-companies\/2012\/google\">Google<\/a>, which has just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/2013\/jan\/17\/google-uk-headquarters-kings-cross\">announced<\/a> the creation of a brand new \u00c2\u00a31-billion HQ in London&#8217;s King&#8217;s Cross, has given a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/business\/2013\/01\/ff-qa-larry-page\/all\/\">wide-ranging interview<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1618448\/wired-cant-quit-adobe-pours-cash-flash-less-ipad-app\"><em>Wired<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s Steven Levy. In it, the billionaire, of whom Levy says, &#8220;Some Googlers wonder if Page, clearly at his happiest working on moon shots, is essentially taking one for the team by assuming the sometimes prosaic tasks of a CEO.&#8221; Here, in a nutshell, are some of the juiciest tidbits of the piece.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Incremental improvement will, says Page, become obsolete&#8211;especially in technology. He sees his job as &#8220;to get people focused on things that are not just incremental.&#8221; By that tenet, Google&#8217;s launch of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3003695\/gmail-20-ios-slick-upgrade\">Gmail<\/a> was &#8220;a leap&#8230; not something that would have happened naturally if we had been focusing on incremental improvements.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The commercial aspect of an invention is just as important as the invention itself. &#8220;When I was growing up, I wanted to be an inventor. Then I realized there&#8217;s a lot of sad stories about inventors like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3000715\/its-nikola-teslas-world-were-just-opening-museums-about-him-it\">Nikola Tesla<\/a>, amazing people who didn&#8217;t have much impact, because they never turned their inventions into businesses.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>&#8220;A great deal of my effort is spent making sure that we have a great user experience across our core products.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>&#8220;How well is [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcoexist.com\/1680783\/crowdsourcing-a-treatment-for-the-cancer-that-killed-steve-jobs\">Steve Jobs<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1793401\/5-reasons-google-sweating-apple\">thermonuclear<\/a> war on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1780303\/android-having-cinderella-moment\">Android<\/a>] working?&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>&#8220;At the time we bought Android, it was pretty obvious that the existing mobile operating systems were terrible. You couldn&#8217;t write software for them. Compare that to what we have now.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>&#8220;We had real issues with how our users shared information, how they expressed their identity and so on. And yeah, [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/most-innovative-companies\/2012\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a>] is a company that&#8217;s strong in that space. But they&#8217;re also doing a really bad job on their products.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>&#8220;I do think the Internet&#8217;s under much greater attack than it has been in the past. Governments are now afraid of the Internet because of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1731395\/libya-youtube-and-internet\">Middle East<\/a> stuff, and so they&#8217;re a little more willing to listen to what I see as a lot of commercial interests that just want to make money by restricting people&#8217;s freedoms. I think that governments fight users&#8217; freedoms at their own peril.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> Finally, a look at the philanthropist in him.
