A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI<\/a> to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican<\/a>, some of whom \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the report said \u00e2\u20ac\u201c were being blackmailed \"<><\/a>by\u00c2\u00a0outsiders. The pope\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report, which was carried by the Italian daily newspaper La\u00c2\u00a0Repubblica.<\/p>\n

The paper said the pope had taken the decision on 17 December that he was going to resign \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Vatileaks\u00e2\u20ac\u009d affair \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 The newspaper said the cardinals described a number of factions, including one whose members were \u00e2\u20ac\u0153united by sexual orientation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n

In an apparent quotation from the report, La Repubblica said some Vatican officials had been subject to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153external influence\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from laymen with whom they had links of a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153worldly nature\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. The paper said this was a clear reference to blackmail.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
