There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the voicemail, not to be left unless you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re \u00e2\u20ac\u0153dying<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the e-mail signoff that we need to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153kill<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d And then there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the observation that what was once normal \u00e2\u20ac\u201d like asking someone for directions \u00e2\u20ac\u201d is now considered \u00e2\u20ac\u0153uncivilized<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Cyber-savvy folks are arguing for such new etiquette rules because in an information-overloaded world, time-wasting communication is not just outdated \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rude. But while living according to the gospel of\u00c2\u00a0technological efficiency and frictionless sharing<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is fine as a Silicon Valley innovation ethos, it makes for a downright depressing social ethic.<\/p>\n

People like Nick Bilton over at\u00c2\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0Bits blog argue that norms\u00c2\u00a0like thank-you messages<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0can cost more in time and efficiency than they are worth. However, such etiquette norms aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just about efficiency:\u00c2\u00a0They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re actually about building thoughtful and pro-social character<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Take my six-year-old daughter. When she looked at her new iPod Touch (a Chrismukkah gift), she saw it as a divine labor-saving device. Unlike the onerous handwritten thank-you notes she had to do for her birthday, she envisioned instead sending quick thank-you texts to friends and family. Months later, she still doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t understand why her parents forbid the shortcut. And she won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t. Not anytime soon.<\/p>\n
