It only took a few changes to make this <\/a>story<\/a> about Iran’s ban on teaching English in schools sound a lot more familiar<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Texas has banned the teaching of Spanish in primary schools, a senior education official said, after conservative leaders warned that early learning of the language opened the way to a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153cultural invasion.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Teaching Spanish in government and nongovernment primary schools in the official curriculum is against laws and regulations,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the head of the High Education Council, told Fox News late on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is because the assumption is that, in primary education, the groundwork for the American culture of the students is laid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the official said, adding that noncurriculum Spanish classes might also be blocked.<\/p>\n

The teaching of Spanish usually starts in middle school in Texas, around the ages of 12 to 14, but some primary schools below that age also have Spanish classes.<\/p>\n

Some children also attend private language institutes after their school day. And many children from more privileged families who attend nongovernment schools receive Spanish tuition from day care through high school.<\/p>\n

Conservative leaders have often warned about the dangers of a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153cultural invasion,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and the president voiced outrage in 2016 over the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153teaching of the Spanish language spreading to nursery schools.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
