As part of my new year’s media diet resolution<\/a>, I’m trying to read a broader range of news than the steady stream of \u00c2\u00a0outrage-bait and Oval Office reality show recaps served up by trending news algorithms and the viral hive mind. To help keep me on track, I’m trying to find five interesting stories a day that aren’t on any most-shared list.<\/em><\/p>\n

  1. “Hospitals Wrestle With Shortage of IV Bags, Linked to Hurricane” (Wall Street Journal<\/em>)<\/a> –<\/strong> The largest supplier of IV bags in America are two factories in Puerto Rico which still only have “intermittent” power after Hurricane Maria, leaving hospitals to scramble to deliver what had been routine care to patients.<\/li>\n
  2. “Somaliland passes first law against rape” (BBC)<\/a> –
    \n<\/strong> Since declaring itself an independent (though unrecognized) country in 1991, Somaliland had no criminal statute outlawing rape, while Somalia still has no law on the books.<\/li>\n
  3. “The ongoing saga of the mysterious Madame Giselle” (Washington Post<\/em>)<\/a> –<\/strong> If you haven’t been following Manuel Roig-Franzia’s reporting on a career grifter who duped her Chevy Chase neighbors with promises of close ties to Ivanka Trump and Jeff Sessions, now’s your chance to jump in. She’s now in Bogota, Colombia, facing charges of defrauding a bank of millions.<\/li>\n
  4. “Deep Learning Sharpens Views of Cells and Genes” (Scientific American<\/em>)<\/a> –<\/strong> Computer scientists and medical researchers are learning to work together and the results are stunning. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The most interesting phrase in science isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcEureka!\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, but \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcThat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s weird\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwhat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going on?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/li>\n
  5. “Air Force nixes evaluations for junior airmen” (Air Force Times)<\/a> –<\/strong> No more performance evaluations for the Air Force’s lowest ranks, which is about a fifth of its 250,000 or so enlisted personnel<\/a>. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Essentially, they go in a file and we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t ever use them again… so the question becomes, why write them?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
